Did you know that the human body creates its own cannabinoids?
Crazy but true. During the 1980s and ‘90s, while scientists were studying cannabis’ effects, they discovered a unique complex of receptors now known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The foundation of the ECS is comprised of two core receptors, cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) and cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2), found largely in the central nervous and immune systems.
The primary function of CB1 and CB2 is to help the body maintain balance, or homeostasis, through the transmission and metabolism of cannabinoids like THC and CBD. The ECS achieves this balance with the help of endocannabinoids that the body naturally produces. Similarly, plants such as cannabis produce phytocannabinoids, which are similar in chemical structure and function to endocannabinoids.
At times, the ECS fails to maintain its balance. Such breakdowns have been linked to chronic pain, depression, anxiety, and other ailments.
Evidence suggests that the phytocannabinoids found in cannabis behave as a surrogate for a person’s deficient endocannabinoids, effectively stepping in and carrying out the ECS’s intended function.
Because each person’s ECS is unique, their response to cannabis products will differ. The evolving science of the ECS is one of the many reasons why Liberty continues to research and create new product formulations, tailored to meet the specific needs of each person.
