July brings us Canada Day, International Joke Day, Cow Appreciation Day, World Emoji Day, National Video Game Day, National Kitten Day and Selena Gomez's birthday. In the world of cannabis, there's one day in July that we concentrate on (pun intended): 7/10. Hot dogs and BBQs are replaced by extracts and dab rigs as we celebrate the second biggest cannabis throw-down of the year. Why 710? Type it into your calculator, turn it upside down, and it says "OIL."
HISTORY OF THE HOLIDAY
Referred to as Oil Day or Dab Day, the 7/10 holiday doesn't have the long history of 4/20. Although no one's exactly sure how it started, the most accepted version is that 7/10 was first observed in 2012 when the 7/10 Cup celebrated various types of cannabis extracts and oils. There's also a strong connection to legalization. Legalizing cannabis in Colorado and Washington, specifically, helped make the use of cannabis oils and dabs more widespread and much safer. Prior to legalization, the production of cannabis oils and extracts like wax and shatter was dangerous. It was a highly combustible process, with no quality assurance or safety measures in place. Many states have since outlawed the use of flammable solvents like butane, and the 7/10 holiday has taken the industry by storm, in a dancing in the rain kind of way.
THE ART & SCIENCE OF EXTRACTS
Technically speaking, a cannabis extract is any oil that concentrates the plant's chemical compounds like THC and CBD. The extraction process is achieved through a variety of methods and solvents. Moving on from the dangerous days of butane, advancements in extraction technology have enabled the use of other solvents like carbon dioxide and pure hydrocarbons in a process that utilizes pressure in a safe closed-loop system. If you're not much of a science person, producing oil and extracts is also an art.
INTRODUCING STRANE DIAMONDS
This year, 7/10 is extra special. Our sister brand, Strane, is launching Strane Diamonds - for a limited time! Diamonds are the strongest material on earth and it's pretty much the same for Strane Diamonds. Here's what our friends at Strane have to say about their exciting release:
"THIS IS what diamonds feel like. Move over, Tiffany. No matter how many carats you pack into a princess cut, it can't compare to a little jar with a lot of THC. Strane Diamonds are for cannasseurs who've dated their fair share of flower and concentrates, and are ready for something special. They're LIMITED EDITION, so you don't get to make a lifelong commitment. But they do have the medical benefits to be with you in sickness and in health. In fact, they're SUPER STRONG at over 95% THC, and they're made from premium flower -- strains may include Raspberry Cough, Bodega Bubblegum or Virgin OG -- for premium relief. High-terpene, high-test concentrates like this are hard to come by. And they're only available while supplies last. Polish your dab rig and make it a night (or day) to remember."
If you're in the state of MD, you might find Strane Diamonds at your local dispensary. No matter where you are, 7/10 is a day to celebrate the legalization of cannabis, the art and science of oils and extracts, and the old high school joke of spelling things on your calculator. Clean your dab rig, get your favorite wax, shatter, budder, badder or other extract, and observe the holiday in style - with a smile.
